I've been sleeping with my jeans on
and seatbelt unbuckled,
So I can leave early
before my regret wakes.

In the check-in, on the road,
I distract myself
Walk, go, leave
go further, leave again
I like my life
Oversimplified.

I never meant to break your
working-class heart
(steady and warm)
But truer ways of joy I found
on the road,
in long railways and stranger tongues
And I'm sorry that we never
Quite catch up with each other.

I never loved goodbyes,
but I love leaving all behind
In the movement I found tranquility,
easing for this burn.

Don't think I'll be able
To ever forget you, no

You're like Venus in the nightly sky,
guiding with your sulphur burn -
you left a mark in me,
      in the air I breathe
Though we never quite catch up,
we never quite meet.

And it breaks my heart either way;
I don't want to leave,
but I cannot stay.
Some very honest thought about loving and leaving.

Wanderlust by ~Peemu touches on the duality of wanting to leave and wanting to stay says the suggester, who went on to add the regret mentioned in the beginning adds some depth to whether she's running away from something or running to find her way back home. When reading this poem I can't help but cheer the narrator on and hope she runs into what she's looking for.... ( Suggested by mellowghost and Featured by Nichrysalis )

I disagree! I love writing in a notebook. So much better than digital. I feel more artistic with real paper. (sorry for the trees) Oh, and a great poem!

I love the lines:

And I'm sorry that we never
Quite catch up with each other.

It's a great piece and I think you capture a lot of emotion in it; it feels almost fruitless, like nothing will come of whatever decision the narrator chooses to make. I think your last stanza sums up the feeling of the poem beautifully, as well as the feelings of many people who read it. You've written something relatable for so many people, and I think that really helps in making it memorable.

Congratulations on the DD! :D It's well deserved!

In all honesty, I hate poetry. Seriously. The only poet I like is Charles Bukowski because the guy is such a dick.

But I loved this. I was captured by the first verse I saw in the preview, clicked on it, and continued to be captured.

Awesome job.

Enough detail to get the reader attached to the narrator, yet enough left out to let the imagination fill in. This is a truly wonderful piece of literature, and I thank you for sharing this. :woohoo:

i really like "you left a mark in me,/ in the air I breathe" i don't know if it has ever happened to anyone else, but sometimes i can smell people when they're not around. it's weird, like, they just walked past me but they're not there and haven't been there. i like how you worded it, "marked the air I breathe." it explains it beautifully.

but i also like how you captured wanderlust. i want to be a flight attendent, i want to travel, just, everywhere. i think you really wrote that feeling of wanting to go and never stop, yet maybe wanting to stop for just a moment to catch up with someone who's marked your air well. Then there's the people you meet when traveling, which you mention as well. kudos.

"working-class heart" everybody is lovable, everyone is loved

"...oversimplified..." is key as well. traveling forever seems simple to me. maybe because you can only take so much with you, maybe because once you stop moving all you have/need/want to do is sleep.

(i hope this made your day! wonderful poem :) )

ok so i found this by randomly looking at the DDs and for some reason i was drawn to read it straight away. i'm not very good with words but this has definitely touched a chord. it just encompasses everything i have been feeling for about a year now and it makes me want to leave again all the more. so thank you :thanks:

I know there area a lot of corny love poems out there the are just overrated, but I love finding the ones that aren't. I like the ambiguity and the whole concept of how traveling on is easier. Very nice job!
